Juan Arturo Abaurrea Calafell received his Bachelor’s degree in Informatics Engineering from the University of the Balearic Islands (2025), including an exchange semester at Ulm University of Applied Sciences, and his Master’s degree in Machine Learning and Big Data from the Polytechnic University of Madrid (2026). Since October 2026 he has been a Ph.D. student in the Machine Learning group at the Center for Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC), as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network fellow in the SPRING project.
His Master’s thesis studied backdoor detection in deep neural networks using activations across multiple layers, and his Bachelor’s thesis built a chatbot that guides patients through colonoscopy preparation.
His main research interest lies in machine learning and many of its subfields. These include explainable, interpretable, and trustworthy artificial intelligence, neural network analysis, representation learning, neural network architectures, bio-inspired neural networks, multimodal learning, foundational models, cybersecurity in AI, AI applied to biology, and the development of AI systems for real-world applications.
